San José’s novel Diridon Airport connector P3 advanced to the next phase of predevelopment with a key city council vote in March. However, the council departed from a staff recommendation to source new funding to complete the predevelopment activities, and instead voted to complete the next phase of feasibility and demand studies using the project’s existing public predevelopment funds.
San José currently has no public transit connection to the airport. For years, the city has been exploring a new public transit project to bridge the 3.5-mile gap between the airport and Diridon Station, which is currently served by the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail and Caltrain, but which will eventually also be connected to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system via BART’s Silicon Valley Phase II Extension project. The city has long considered, but never sourced, a “last mile” solution that would seamlessly connect the airport with those bay area transit networks.
