July ushered in a new era of transit in Montreal with the grand opening of the Réseau Express Metropolitain (REM) light rail project – the first new light rail line in Montreal in Decades. For now, only the REM’s southern branch is starting operations, along with five stations along that segment. Once the entire project is operational, however, it will consist of 67 kilometers of light rail and 26 stations, and it will provide transit coverage to most of the greater Montreal metro area. Not only will REM connect to Montreal’s South Shore, but it will also reach northwest to Deux-Montagnes, southwest to Kirkland, and south to the Montréal-Trudeau International Airport.
