The Italian healthcare system provides an interesting social infrastructure case for examining PPP performance.  Italy has leveraged PPP solutions extensively for the construction and modernization of its hospital network.  Between 2002 and 2014, 21 PPP contracts, worth EUR 2.4 billion, were awarded and a total of 12,727 new hospital beds were provided.
