The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) board appears to be nearing a decision on whether to start the procurement process for an I-77 South Express lanes P3. The board received an analysis from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in August and followed up with additional questions in September. A decision on the project is tentatively scheduled for the board’s 16 October meeting.
The project would extend the existing express lanes on I-77 from Charlotte approximately 8.4 miles south to the South Carolina state line. NCDOT’s latest estimate is that the project would cost approximately $3.7 billion. The existing express lanes system runs from Charlotte north to Mooresville, and is operated by I-77 Mobility Partners.
