The corridors between Quebec City in Quebec, and Toronto and Windsor in Ontario, are a tiny part of Canada’s landmass, yet the stretch is home to nearly two thirds of Canada’s population and two thirds of its economy. The lack of reliable, high-speed regional rail transportation along the corridor has long been a thorn in the side of Canadian transit advocates, particularly as the corridor meets all the natural requirements for high-speed rail service. The travel statistics highlight the current chasm. In 2019, passenger rail captured a mere 2.3% of all trips along the corridor, compared to 94% by car.
